Grade Exams & Performance Certificates are available for:

  • PIANO
    Piano exams consist of three pieces, chosen by the candidate from the appropriate lists in the current syllabus, scales and arpeggios, sight-reading and aural tests. Total marks in all individual Practical exams are 150. 100 marks are required to achieve Pass, 120 marks to pass with Merit and 130 marks to pass with Distinction. There are eight grades of assessment (Grades 1 to 8).
  • MUSIC THEORY
    As instrumental skills progress, development in music theory and musicianship becomes increasingly important in helping students to perform with sensitivity, understanding and confidence. ABRSM’s Music Theory exams aim to give students a thorough understanding of the building blocks of music, starting with the basics of rhythm and notes, and going on to cover harmony and counterpoint, composition, and a broad knowledge of western music, including composers and their works, structure, style and period. Each Music Theory paper is marked out of a total of 100, with 66 marks required for a Pass, 80 for a Merit and 90 for a Distinction. There are eight grades of assessment (Grades 1 to 8).
  • VIOLIN
    Violin exams consist of three pieces, chosen by the candidate from the appropriate lists in the current syllabus, scales and arpeggios, sight-reading and aural tests. Total marks in all individual Practical exams are 150. 100 marks are required to achieve Pass, 120 marks to pass with Merit and 130 marks to pass with Distinction. There are eight grades of assessment (Grades 1 to 8).
  • GUITAR
    Guitar exams consist of three pieces, chosen by the candidate from the appropriate lists in the current syllabus, scales and arpeggios, sight-reading and aural tests. Total marks in all individual Practical exams are 150. 100 marks are required to achieve Pass, 120 marks to pass with Merit and 130 marks to pass with Distinction.   • SINGING
    Singing exams consist of three accompanied songs at Grades 1-5 and four accompanies songs at Grades 6-8, chosen by the candidate from the appropriate lists in the current syllabus, an unaccompanied traditional song, sight-singing and aural tests. Total marks in all individual Practical exams are 150. 100 marks are required to achieve Pass, 120 marks to pass with Merit and 130 marks to pass with Distinction. There are eight grades of assessment (Grades 1 to 8).
  • CHORAL SINGING
    The Choral Singing syllabus is designed for a wide range of choirs. Exams are available at three levels – Initial, Intermediate and Advanced – and choirs can choose their own repertoire. At each level choirs perform vocal exercises followed by three contrasted choral works. The examiners for this syllabus have extensive choral experience providing professional assessment and valuable feedback for both choir director and singers.

London College of Music (LCM), at the University of West London, is the largest specialist music and performing arts institution in the UK offering an impressive range of innovative courses, respected worldwide and delivered with creativity and passion.

London College of Music Examinations is an international examinations board offering graded and diploma qualifications in music, drama and communication. Examinations are held across a large network of exam centres worldwide, and are unique in the graded examinations world in being awarded by a university.

London College of Music Examinations are internationally recognised and fully accredited by Ofqual (Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) and other education authorities in many countries around the world. It also offers UCAS points towards university entry at Grades 6-8. UCAS tariff points are awarded to students attaining LCM Advanced Level music qualifications (grades 6, 7 and 8), in both practical and theory subjects. For Higher Education music courses, practical music grades have always been an important factor in the application process. MUSIC

London College of Music (LCM) offers grade exams for a wide range of instruments and singing, from Early Learning Levels to Grade 8. Candidates perform three (or sometimes four) pieces, and technical work featuring scales and arpeggios, exercises or orchestral extracts. They also choose two supporting tests from a selection including sight reading, aural, musical knowledge and improvising.

Along with their overall grade, they are marked on specific musical components giving detailed feedback to help with their ongoing learning. Pieces are assessed by three distinct components:

  • Notational Accuracy and Fluency: the observation and realisation of the notes and any other details in the musical score
  • Technical Facility: the ability to control the instrument effectively with things such as tone, breath control and articulation
  • Communication and Interpretation: the interpretation of the music and the way it conveys a sense of contextual understanding and audience engagement

    • Band exams are offered in Guitar, Bass, Drums and Band Based Keyboards at Grades 3, 5 and 8

    • Band exams are Performance Certificates, so consist of 5 performance pieces and no other tests or exercises

Trinity College London is an international exam board that has been providing assessments since 1877. With a rich heritage of academic rigour and a positive, supportive approach to assessment, Trinity College London provides recognised and respected qualifications in a unique spectrum of communicative skills — from music, drama and arts activities to English language — at all levels.
