At Lorraine Music Academy, we believe that if our students can use their hands, then they can play an instrument (if they desire to). Through our education programs and courses we bring to our students musical experiences and musical memories that will last for a life time. Our students get excellent training and develop great confidence by being exposed to wide range of musical and creative opportunities through our training programs, workshops, recitals, concerts and public performances. Through music education we wish to provide children with social, educational and skill development opportunities. We also aim to promote in them a sense of self-esteem, accomplishment and pride. We maintain a special learning environment designed to provide a rich and rewarding musical experience for each student.

We have various programs for a student to learn the VIOLIN ranging from the Beginners level to Grade-8 level. We have a faculty of internationally qualified musicians under the talented leadership of Lorraine Fiona Aloysius, our Creative Director & Principal. Lorraine also oversees a regular visiting faculty that comes in from across the globe including some of the top global Colleges of Music & Drama, to teach our students during various periods of the year.

As our student’s instrumental skills progress, development in music theory and musicianship becomes increasingly important in helping him/her to perform with sensitivity, understanding and confidence. Lorraine Music Academy aims to give all our students a thorough understanding of the building blocks of music, starting with the basics of rhythm and notes, and going on to cover harmony and counterpoint, composition, and a broad knowledge of western music, including composers and their works, structure, style and period. They are also equipped to prepare for scales and arpeggios, sight-reading and aural tests.

All students of Lorraine Music Academy get assessed through our periodic Internal Examinations. We also prepare our students for International Examinations conducted at our Music Centres by world renowned & globally accredited organisations such as Trinity College London, U.K., Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (A.B.R.S.M.), U.K., RockSchool, U.K., etc.

Graded Music Exams are great for developing a full range of skills and techniques, learning new styles of music and also nurturing your performance skills. Grade Exams and Performance Certificates are available from Entry Level (Debut) up to Grade 8.

It is essential for a student to possess a VIOLIN of their own at home which would be used to practice on. Regular practise at home after each learning session at the Lorraine Music Academy Centre is imperative in order for the student to get ready for the next learning session.

VIOLIN

The violin is a string instrument usually with four strings tuned in perfect fifth. The violin is also known as a fiddle. The violin is the smallest, highest-pitched member of the violin family of string instruments, which also includes the viola, the cello, and the double bass.

A musician who plays the violin is called a violinist or a fiddler. The violinist produces a sound by drawing a bow across one or more strings, by plucking the strings with either hand, or by a range of other techniques. The strings may be stopped by the fingers of the other hand to produce a full range of pitches. The violin is played by musicians in a wide variety of musical genres, including Baroque music, classical, jazz, folk music, rock and roll, soft rock, popular music. The violin has come to be played in many non-Western music cultures all over the world, including India. The violin is used in orchestral accompaniments and as a solo instrument in South Indian classical music – Carnatic Music. Popular Indian film makers have used the violin extensively in film music scoring. Ethnomusicologists have observed the widespread use of the violin across Asia, Europe and the Americas. In many traditions of folk music, the tunes are not written but are memorized by successive generations of musicians and passed on, in the oral tradition.

Violin Sizes

Children use smaller string instruments than adults. Violins are made in so-called fractional sizes for young students. Apart from full-size (4/4) violins, 7/8, 3/4, and 1/2 instruments are available. Finely made fractional sized violins, especially smaller than 1/2 size, are extremely rare. While related in some sense to the dimensions of the instruments, the fractional sizes are not to be literal descriptions of relative proportions. A 3/4-sized instrument is not three-quarters the length of the full size instrument. The body length (not including the neck) of a full size, or 4/4, violin is 356 mm (about 14 inches). A 3/4 violin’s body length is 335 mm (about 13 inches), and a 1/2 size is 310 mm (about 12 inches). For the Viola, the violin’s closest family member, size is specified as body length in inches or centimetres rather than fractional sizes. A full-size viola measures 16 inches (40 cms).

Well-known manufacturers of violin include Yamaha, Stradivarius, Hofner, Stentor, Cecilio, Klaus Mueller, Karl Willhelm, Knilling, Amati, among many others.
