MUSIC
London College of Music (LCM) offers grade music exams for a wide range of instruments. They also offer grade exams for singing, from Early Learning Levels to Grade 8. Applicants perform three (or sometimes four) pieces, and technical work including scales and arpeggios, exercises or orchestral extracts. They also choose two supporting tests from a selection including sight reading, aural, musical knowledge and improvising.
Along with their overall grade, they are marked on specific musical components. Thus it gives feedback in detail to help with their ongoing learning. The assessments of the pieces are made on the basis of three distinct components:
- Notational Accuracy and Fluency: the observation and realization of the notes and any other details in the musical score
- Technical Facility: the ability to control the instrument effectively with things such as tone, breath control and articulation
- Communication and Interpretation: interpretation of music and the way it conveys a sense of contextual understanding and audience engagement
