GUITARS

Indeed, guitars are popular musical instruments that make sound by the playing of its typically six strings. The sound is thus projected acoustically or through electrical amplification. It is a plucked string instrument, played with fingers or a pick. Hence we can play it by strumming or plucking the strings. The right hand strums or plucks the strings while fretting the strings with the left hand.

Guitars comprise of a body with a rigid neck to which we can attach strings, usually six in number. They are usually constructed of various woods and strung with wither nylon or steel strings. However some modern guitars are made of polycarbonate materials.

Genres such as blues, bluegrass, country, flamenco, folk, jazz, jota, mariachi, metal, punk, reggae, rock, soul, and many forms of pop music identifies Guitars as a primary instrument.

There are mainly two families of guitars:

  • Acoustic Guitars
  • Electric Guitars.

Acoustic Guitar

The body of acoustic guitars, which acts as an echoing chamber, amplifies the tone produced by vibration of the strings. Sometimes guitarists play the classical guitar as a solo instrument using a wide range of finger picking techniques. There are three main types of the modern acoustic guitars:

  • Classical nylon-string guitars
  • Steel-string acoustic guitars
  • Archtop guitars

Electric Guitar

Electric guitars use an amplifier that can electronically manipulate and shape the tone. Earlier amplified guitars had a hollow body. However a solid body was eventually found more suitable as it was less prone to feedback. Electric guitars had a profound and ongoing influence on popular culture.

Bass Guitar

Bass guitars, which is also called the electric bass, or simply bass, is a stringed instrument. It is commonly played with the fingers or thumb. Therefore techniques used while playing bass guitars are plucking, slapping, popping, tapping, thumping, or picking with a plectrum. A plectrum is also known as a pick.

Bass guitars are similar to electric guitars in appearance and also construction. But it has a longer neck and scale length, with four to six strings. The four-string bass is the most common. They are transposing instruments. Like electric guitars, we can plug bass guitars into an amplifier and speaker for live performances.

Indeed many styles of music utilize bass guitars, including rock, pop, metal, punk rock, country, reggae, gospel, blues, and jazz. Moreover it is a soloing instrument in jazz, jazz fusion, latin, funk and progressive rock. It is also a soloing instrument in other rock and metal styles of music too.

The construct of modern guitars suit both left-handed and right handed players. Usually, the dominant hand, which in most people is the right hand, is used to pluck or strum the guitar. In fact this is very similar to the convention of the violin family of instruments where the right hand controls the bow.
